So Many Uses
The Eastern red cedar is widely grown on tree farms exclusively for fresh cut or live dug Christmas trees.
It is used as a wind break tree, planted in staggered double rows.
Often used as ornamentals for their conical habit and evergreen foliage.
Having a fibrous root system makes it useful for erosion control.
The heartwood is highly resistant to decay, making them perfect for fence posts because of their longevity in the soil.  A fence post made of Juniperus virginiana will not rot or twist and can last 100 years.
The heartwood is also used to make a red dye.
Eastern red cedar wood is highly aromatic with insect repelling properties - moths and buffalo beetles find the smell repugnent.
Its wood is used for hope chests - or cedar chests to keep moths away, and lining in closets or drawers where winter clothes or blankets are stored.
Cedar chips are used in gardens to repel insects.  Not only does it keep pests away, it is added mulch.
The shavings, chips or sawdust of red cedarwood placed around the house, playgrounds or other wood structures will keep termites away.
Place some cedar chips in the chicken coop to keep it smelling fresh and keep spiders and other insects away.
Also called Pencil cedar, it was once used as the principal wood source for pencils until less expensive wood and synthetic materials replaced it.
The bark provides nesting materials for birds and it's a favorite nesting material of the cardinal.
